2015 ~ ADVENT COMPOSING COMPETITION ~ now closed

Competition – update – Oct.2015

Our concert, ‘O Come, Emmanuel’, on Saturday 28th Nov. in Ely Cathedral will include the first performance of the winning entries for our inaugural composing competition – a UK-wide competition to write a new piece of Advent choral music: Edmund Jolliffe, ‘Jesus Christ the Apple Tree’, was chosen as the winner by the choir & Ji Heng Lee, ‘Maranâ Thâ’, was chosen for a special award.

We are delighted that both competition winners Edmund & Ji Heng, will be able to join us and we hope that you will be able to as well to celebrate the start of Advent in choral style!

 

The Competition

Ely Consort, a chamber choir of around 40 voices based in the cathedral city of Ely, Cambridgeshire, invites entries for a competition to compose a choral work to be performed in an advent concert in Ely Cathedral on Saturday 28 November 2015.

The closing date for entries is 31 August 2015 and the winning entrants will be notified by 1 October 2015. This competition is open to UK residents only.

The composition should be written for SATB choir with or without keyboard accompaniment (either organ or piano). Use of divisi within parts is permissible. The choir’s website (www.elyconsort.org.uk) or Facebook page will give an indication of the range and difficulty of repertoire we perform.

Prize

The winner will receive a prize of £250 and two tickets to the concert in Ely Cathedral on Saturday 28 November 2015.

Candidates should choose a text which is appropriate for advent. Candidates are responsible for ensuring that any text is free from third-party copyright. The composition should be between 3 and 6 minutes in length.

How to Enter

• Study the terms and conditions on below and ensure that you are happy to agree to them.

• Download, Complete and sign the application form on page 3. Check that the parent or guardian’s consent is completed for entrants under the age of 18. The organisers will only ever use personal details for the purposes of administering this competition and will not publish them or provide them to anyone without permission.

• The score should be submitted by email in PDF format to [email protected]

• The closing date for entries is Monday 31 August. Entries received after the deadline will not be considered.

• This competition is open to UK residents only. Overseas entries will not be considered.

• All entries submitted must be new and original compositions which have not previously been performed in public, recorded or published.

• The compositions must be between 3 and 6 minutes in length.

• The winning entrant will be notified by 1 October 2015.

• Ely Consort reserves the right to withhold the prize should the entries not be of a sufficiently high standard.

• The judges’ decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into. The judges are unable to provide feedback on individual submissions.

• Travel expenses cannot be reimbursed for the concert on 28 November 2015. Composers are responsible for making their own travel and accommodation arrangements.

• Copyright in the winning composition will remain with the composer, who will agree to allow the use of their composition by Ely Consort without charge in future performances.

• Composers entering this competition confirm that their work is original and hitherto unpublished and will not infringe any third party’s copyright.

• Composers entering this competition confirm that the text used is either original to the composer, copyright free, or copyright clearance has been gained, and will not infringe any third party’s copyright.

• Ely Consort reserve the right to cancel or adapt the competition, or vary or change the prizes.
